Open the document in the desktop app to set and remove tabs. Word has a ruler feature that enables you to do reasonably accurate layout work right within a Word document. The Microsoft Word ruler is useful for creating resumes, cover letters, forms, brochures, and other documents where it matters where and how big type or graphics elements are.

1. Open Word 2007 (as you may notice, now we don't have any vertical ruler and horizontal ruler)
2. Click 'View Ruler' at the top of the vertical scroll bar.
3. Once you clicked, the horizontal ruler and vertical rulers appeared.
4. To hide rulers, just click the same button again. (as in no.1)

Click the View tab, then click the Ruler check box to show the horizontal and vertical ruler.

Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010 use the Ribbon instead of the file menu. Enabling and disabling the rulers is done through either of the following methods.
Click the View Ruler icon on the top of the right vertical scroll bar, as shown in the picture.
You can also click the View tab and check the box for Ruler.
Earlier versions of Word, OpenOffice, and other word processors
- Click the Viewdrop-down menu at the top of Word.
- Check Ruler to enable the Ruler or uncheck Ruler to disable the Ruler.
